Abstract | While much has been written on the need for faculty maternity leave policies in institutions of higher learning, the development of such policies is difficult given inherent administrative complexities and multiple approval processes. As a result, many institutions have either no policy or one that is inadequate or out of compliance with applicable laws. In this article, the author shares key steps and considerations in developing a faculty maternity leave policy that is legal, fair and supportive of an institution's mission and culture.
