Abstract	Literary critics and historians have long attempted to define what is authentic in western literature, praising those works that come closest to presenting a true picture of western life. When read through this lens, Molly Gloss' "The Jump Off Creek" and Nancy E. Turner's "These Is My Words" could be considered praiseworthy. Both present fictional versions of western women's experiences that have the trappings of true accounts, notably memoir. Contemporary western writers have refocused their presentation of the image of women in western literature to one that is more "authentic" than the stereotypical view of the western woman as both a submissive helpmate and a civilizing force. Recently, however, new directions in western literary criticism have emerged that call into question the idea that western literature can or should be an authentic portrayal of real life. (Author).
