Abstract | In order to meet the NASPE (2002) "Active Start" guidelines for preschool age children, it is important to consider a number of factors. Preschoolers should have plenty of unstructured as well as structured (planned) physical play throughout each day. They are quite capable physically and should accumulate considerable practice of their fundamental motor skills by the time they move on to kindergarten. Preschoolers learn best when the physical play environment is consistent with their developmental needs. This article discusses effective physical play experiences in order to meet the "Active Start" guidelines for preschoolers. It also provides strategies which teachers can incorporate to create a mastery climate within their program. (Contains 9 figures.) (ERIC). |
