AbstractThe purpose of this paper was to determine what communication skills are considered most important by employers in the accounting profession as well as to determine the general office, income tax, and bookkeeping software packages used by CPA firms in Mississippi. The data was collected by means of an electronic five-point Likert-type survey instrument. In all instances, the communication skills possessed by current entry-level accountants was lower than the skills needed by entry-level accountants. The greatest differences in written communications occurred in writing letters, memos, reports, and proposals with current entry-level accountants not possessing as high a level of skill as needed by their employers. The greatest differences in oral communication skills were related to interpersonal skills, meetings, and presentations. Results showed a need for accounting employees to be skilled in using Microsoft Office as well as ProSystem and QuickBooks accounting software. (Author).
