Abstract | During the the Secondary School Showcase, which was held by Brown University's Education Alliance in Providence, Rhodie Island last January 2004, schools from across the country showed that educational equity can be achieved through heterogeneous grouping of students and through differentiating instruction to meet all learners' needs. According to Pam Fisher of the Center for Inquiry on Secondary Education for the Maine Department of Education, schools tend to place students who have difficulty in school in an "easier" class with less challenging work. Although ability grouping creates greater efficiency and ease for teachers and students learn better and feel more positive about themselves, studies show that it doesn't benefit the great majority of students. In this article, the author discusses the limitations of ability grouping. The author also presents the alternatives adopted by some schools in place of ability grouping. (ERIC). |
