| Abstract | In an economy recovering from the pandemic, record unemployment is not solely due to a lack of jobs, instead, U.S. employers are in the midst of dealing with a so-called "skills gap." While most economists report that there is a large pool of potential workers to fill the estimated more than 7.2 million job openings, employers have found there is a mismatch between the requirements of these positions and job seekers lacking the necessary skills required to work in them. In the United States, several historic pathways exist to prepare citizens to gain the skills necessary for employment, such as workforce training programs, military service, or career and technical education. With the reauthorization of federal legislation in the past several years that supports career readiness, a new opportunity is emerging for coordination of these important worker preparation programs to open more opportunities to grow the talent pool.
