Abstract | The National Center for Educational Statistics (US Department of Education, 2016) reports enrollment in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) has increased 36 percent since 1990, with the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPED) reporting 355,058 students enrolled in HBCUs compared to 260,381 in 1990. The growth of HBCUs is reflective of diverse experiences they can provide. They vary in mission, land grant or liberal. They vary in classification, public and private. They vary in student body from a few hundred to thousands. Yet, despite these differences, the one element in which they all need to align is the perceived significance of research and development (R&D) at their institutions, all of them. This exploratory study of IPEDs data reported by HBCUs between 2009 and 2016 examines the relationship between university expenditure categories and student retention. The data suggest research expenditures have a stronger correlation to student retention than any other institutional expenditure, implying there may need to be a new model to examining their retention initiatives.
