AbstractDavid Thissen is a professor in the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience, Quantitative Program at the University of North Carolina. His research interests include psychological testing, measurement, and item response theory. Here Thissen expresses his gratitude to Howard Wainer for his illuminating discussion of the oral presentation upon which "Bad Questions: An Essay Involving Item Response Theory" (hereafter referred to as "Bad Questions") is based, and to Andrew Ho and Terry Ackerman for joining Wainer in providing written commentaries on the print version. Thissen's response in this article comments that Ho's emphasis in his concluding remarks about a renewed emphasis on score uses in statistical training is quite possibly the best point to have arisen in this entire discussion. While all of the methods used to teach statistics are means to accomplish some goal, not ends in themselves, the trick is to set up situations in which students notice and internalize that. (ERIC).
