AbstractLimLimited research exists about the experiences and perceptions of school superintendents and their professional use of social media. I aimed to examine the use and perceptions of New Jersey school superintendents and social media. Both are essential to understand their use to transform the education landscape and how people communicate. I applied a qualitative grounded theory approach to explore both issues. I interviewed 20 public school superintendents and analyzed the data to determine the perception and use of social media. Four themes emerged from the findings: (a) social media usage, (b) information-seeking, (c) communication, and (d) challenges. The findings revealed that participants perceive social media to be needed and useful for growth, information gathering, communicating, and connecting. Superintendents use various social media tools and similar social media platforms. They identified benefits and concerns regarding safety and challenges for social media. Superintendents are using social media purposefully, consistently, and with good intention. When infusing social media, developing best practices, policies, and procedures, and offering training opportunities is recommended. Another recommendation is to replicate this study with other leaders to diffuse the spread of social media use to speed up the adoption rate.
