Abstract | This study was conducted to determine which admission criteria are most commonly utilized in selecting students into sonography programs, and whether a relationship exists between admission criteria and academic success in sonography education. All program directors from CAAHEP-accredited or CAAHEP-accreditation seeking sonography programs were sent an invitation to participate in the study, and 105 respondents completed the electronic questionnaire included with the invitation. The participants answered questions regarding their institutional setting, the types of cognitive and/or noncognitive admission criteria used, the number of students admitted each year, and the attrition rates of each cohort. Of the 105 respondents, 30 reported using only cognitive admission criteria, and 75 reported using a combination of cognitive and noncognitive admission criteria. The most frequently utilized cognitive admission criteria reported were earning a grade of "C" or better in prerequisite courses, cumulative GPA, college math/science GPA, and writing samples. The most frequently utilized noncognitive admission criteria reported were interviews, sonography department observations, having prior medical experience, and reference letters. The findings demonstrate there is no significant relationship between the attrition rates of sonography programs using only cognitive admission criteria, and sonography programs using a combination of cognitive and noncognitive admission criteria.
