AbstractAs new generations arrive to leadership positions within the higher education arena, there are new opportunities to conduct further research and expand on what has been previously published on leadership and generational cohorts. The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to examine if and to what extent there was an effect of leaders' generational cohort (Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y) on at least one of nine specific transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership style attributes at higher education institutions. The final sample consisted of 169 leaders who were full-time, non-faculty employees, at five postsecondary public institutions and not-for-profit private institutions of higher education in Florida. The full-range theory of leadership by Bass along with Mannheim's theory on generations and Strauss and Howe's theory on generational cohorts served as the theoretical foundations of this study. The MLQ instrument, despite obtaining low reliability scores for the subscales, which prompted the elimination of eight dependent variables, along with a demographic survey were used to anonymously collect data from the participants. Results of the one-way ANOVA showed that there was no statistically significant difference in management-by-exception (passive) scores among the three generational cohorts, F(2, 169) = 1.71, p = 0.18, partial ?[superscript 2] = 0.02. Results of this study may benefit higher education institutions in the development of more effective leadership programs.
