Abstract | This quantitative nonexperimental study explored the relationship that specific student demographics have on community college remedial students' persistence to graduation. Through the lens of Tinto's student integration model, the role age, sex, race, and successful completion of remedial reading courses have on student persistence and graduation was examined for 1,481 participant records of new, first time in college students who placed into developmental reading by means of the college's initial placement test protocol. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of community college remedial reading by using correlational methods to explore the relationship between specific student demographic characteristics, their placement into developmental reading, and the persistence to graduation. Associational studies do not determine cause and effect, the results of this study provide the community college explored with enough data to consider updating its policies and practices for placement testing and remedial reading requirements. The findings from this study revealed that sex did not negatively influence persistence, academic success, or graduation; but, race did have a significant association to persistence and degree completion. Also, successful completion of college reading remediation had a significant association to persistence and graduation. The conclusion implies that some specific student demographic characteristics do correlate to persistence and graduation.
