AbstractUnderstanding how university medical school faculty and staff perceive the institution's mission statement, in conjunction with their person-environment fit, can provide administration with useful insight into: employee's match to the institution's mission statement, employee level of organizational commitment, and reasons for retention. This qualitative study sought to discover how faculty and staff at an osteopathic medical school perceived both the university's mission statement and their person-environment (P-E) fit with the medical school. The study's phenomenological design allowed participants to express their perceptions and interpretations using their own voice. Research addressing mission statement match and organizational commitment of faculty and staff at osteopathic medical schools can be beneficial to university leadership, employee retention, and recruitment. Organizational commitment theory and P-E fit modeling guided the study. The study recruited six faculty and six staff members from an osteopathic medical school, utilizing in-person interviews, and an inductive thematic analysis. The results of this study revealed that the faculty and staff collectively held a strong match with half of the university's mission statement phrases and had varying levels of mismatch with the other phrases. The study also revealed a strong affective organizational commitment with strong levels of person-organization and person-job fit. Implications of the study include the need for a shorter and more focused mission statement along with the inclusion of faculty and staff for future mission statement updates.
