AbstractPeople are living longer. The average age of the population is increasing, and is expected to keep growing. Any person age 65 and older is now considered "geriatric." However, although growing, this population is not receiving adequate nursing care, and results in increased pain, falls, and even death. Geriatric curriculum is becoming more and more important in nursing with the aging of the Baby Boomers and those over 65. The purpose of this project was to study an existing nursing program with 91 nursing students to discover their opinions on the current geriatric curriculum offered in their program. Completing a confidential and anonymous Likert survey, the students state, although room for improvement, the current curriculum is satisfactory and does focus on geriatric patients adequately. Expected outcomes match the results of the survey, which show approximately 75% of the students feel adequately prepared to care for geriatric patients if they graduated the program today. Increased knowledge and preparation will improve patient outcomes for the geriatric population. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
