AbstractThe interest in working from home in contrast to going to an office continues to be a growing phenomenon. This research examined personal characteristics of telecommuters and non-telecommuters including age, gender, years of working for the organization, and job satisfaction in the quality control and quality assurance arena. This study aimed to extend, in part, Belanger's 1999 study, "Workers' Propensity to Telecommute: An Empirical Study." Belanger recommended future studies of telecommuting could be based on the individual characteristics of workers. A quantitative analysis was used to investigate the characteristics that differentiate quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) professionals whom when offered the opportunity decide to telecommute from those who decline. The results of this study revealed significant differences existed when it comes to age, gender, and job satisfaction of telecommuters versus non-telecommuters. No significant difference was found between number of years working for the organization of telecommuting versus non-telecommuting quality assurance and quality control professionals.
