AbstractThis mixed-methods study focused on the engagement of student veterans at a community college and sought to understand the factors that contribute to the involvement and success of student veterans at a California community college. Using a sequential explanatory design, the methodology involved written surveys and focus group interviews to investigate how veterans perceive their level of engagement and to determine the relationship of engagement to academic successes as measured by cumulative GPA. Based on both the quantitative and qualitative analyses, four themes emerged: (a) engagement is meaningful to student veterans, (b) veterans are dedicated learners, (c) veterans expect academic challenges, and (d) student veterans need and appreciate a supportive learning environment. The results of this study provide researchers and practitioners with a better understanding of the student veteran population, their level of engagement, and their academic outcomes. The results can be used to initiate veterans' educational support programs, to improve services for this unique student population, and to create a campus environment for student veterans that promote student learning and success.
