AbstractThis phenomenological study shed light on the reflective college experiences of 11 individuals with Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism from a competence rather than a deficit model of disability (Biklen, 2005). Using Goleman's model of Social Intelligence (2006) as a theoretical framework, the cognitive, behavioral, and affective processes of interpersonal interaction between participants and college friends was examined. Participants reported having difficulties in the areas of social awareness and social facility that impacted their ability to accurately demonstrate empathic concern towards friends. While participant's reported feeling empathic concern towards college friends, the demonstration of empathy towards friends required conscious effort and practice. Participants also identified four main qualities as being valued within their college friendships: trust, support, connection, and shared interests. Recommendations for practitioners in higher education and implications for future research are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
