Abstract | Many K-6 teachers and students still think of mathematics as a totally separate subject from literacy. Yet incorporating math content into the language arts block helps students gain skills for reading many kinds of texts. Bringing reading, writing, and talking into the math classroom supports the development of conceptual knowledge and problem solving, in addition to computational skills. This book explains integrated instruction and provides tools to make it a reality. Grounded in current best practices for both language arts and math, the book includes planning advice, learning activities, assessment strategies, reproducibles, and resources, plus examples from actual classrooms. This title is part of the "Tools for Teaching Literacy Series" (Donna Ogle, Ed.; Camille Blachowicz, Ed.) The book includes eight chapters: (1) What Is Math-Literacy Integration?; (2) Getting Children Started on Math Talk; (3) Helping Children Get Better at Math Talk; (4) Orienting Children to Math Texts; (5) Actively Reading Math Texts; (6) Learning Math Vocabulary; (7) Math Writing; and (8) Math Assessment through Literacy Products. Three appendixes conclude the publication: (1) NCTM Standards for School Mathematics; (2) Standards for the English Language Arts of the NCTE and the IRA; and (3) Teachers' Favorite Read-Alouds.
