Abstract | In this California state curriculum model for grade 2, "People Who Make a Difference," students study Cesar Chavez. The students learn about his role in improving the lives of farm workers. They also learn about Chavez as a family man, about the role religion played in his life, and about his role as an organizer, as a labor leader, and as an environmentalist. Students learn about Cesar Chavez as a civil rights leader and as an advocate for social justice and nonviolence. The curriculum presents a history/social science framework; addresses history/social science state standards; sets a context; poses focus questions; cites expected learning outcomes; discusses assessment; lists key concepts; suggests an essential vocabulary, primary sources, and visuals; and provides a detailed step-by-step procedure for implementing each of the four lessons. The lessons are: (1) "The Food We Eat"; (2) "Farm Labor"; (3) "Pesticides"; and (4) "The Importance of Farm Owners and Farm Workers." A biography and photographs of Cesar Chavez are included. (BT) |
