Abstract | This booklet contains 25 classroom-ready, literacy-building activities that can also serve as a starting point for teachers to develop their own activities. The metacognitive aspects of the exercises encourage students to reflect on what they did and what they learned and to discuss what they got out of the exercises. The activities share the following basic strategies rooted in metacognitive study: (1) instruction in any given topic must begin at the learner's level of experience; (2) long-term retention of any information occurs only when the information has meaning in the learner's life; (3) learners should be provided with tasks that go beyond simple recall; (4) strategies should invite a broad range of responses; (5) understanding why and how we learn is an integral part of the learning process; and (6) failure is viewed as a step in the process. In addition to simple tasks to stimulate students' thinking and to help them become better readers and writers, each activity includes background information and instructions for conducting the activity.
