Abstract | Offering hope to parents and practical guidelines for child care providers on how to use their imaginations, and those of their charges, to enrich children's minds and hearts, this book is a case study of the community created by the gifted director of a child care center. The book's narrative shows how the care providers combine teaching ability and emotional responsiveness to help even the smallest children learn words, concepts, stories, and management of their emotions. The book makes a quiet but powerful case for the pedagogical skill and psychological insight that child caregivers so often underpaid and under valued can bring to their work. The book also emphasizes how warm, quasi-familial, even mentoring relationships can develop between child care providers and their preschool families. (HTH) |
