| Abstract | This booklet provides suggestions and techniques to promote and enhance the music education of British children who have visual impairments. The following issues are addressed: (1) recognizing early signs of interest; (2) choosing an instrument; (3) choosing a teacher; (4) getting started; (5) providing lessons; (6) practicing; (7) signs of progress; (8) instrument care; (9) non-Western and non-classical instruments; (10) access to repertoire; (11) playing by ear; (12) large print music; (13) braille music; (14) the voice; (15) aids to learning; (16) losing sight; (17) grade examinations; (18) ensembles; (19) linking into general music examinations; and (20) beyond formal education. Appendices include information on identifying a visual impairment and learning styles of students with visual impairments, teaching students who have visual impairments and have additional disabilities, and Royal National Institute for the Blind schools specifically run for students with visual impairments and additional disabilities.
