Abstract | This report issued by the American Institute of Physics presents data on various aspects of the physics academic workforce. For the school year 1997-98, the institute measured the number of physics faculty, number of women faculty, turnover rates, retirement rates, new hires, frozen positions, and faculty recruitment efforts. Data suggest that the academic workforce in physics has remained relatively steady. Overall, the data indicate stability in hiring and turnover and in the physics faculty population as a whole, although individual departments have experienced change. The number of FTE (full-time equivalent) faculty in physics departments that grant Ph.D.s and Bachelor's degrees was relatively constant; however, the number of master's degree-granting departments has decreased. Overall, physics departments employed slightly more physicists in 1998 than in 1996. Women faculty in physics departments increased in number; almost half of physics departments employed at least one female member in 1998. Turnover rate has remained steady, and the retirement rate increased slightly. The number of departments hiring new faculty increased.
