AbstractThis handbook is designed to help classroom teachers work effectively with student teachers. It focuses on the ongoing mentoring relationship the teacher establishes with the student teacher. Besides providing concrete ideas and practical tools for working with student teachers, this handbook brings the voices and experiences of other mentoring teachers and their student teachers. Chapter 1, "Communicating Your Classroom Management Strategy," discusses the importance of community and teacher competencies that promote community. Chapter 2, "An Overview of Your Relationship with the Student Teacher," discusses benefits and challenges for teachers and student teachers. Chapter 3, "Getting Started as Colleagues," examines how to lay the groundwork and how to welcome the student teacher. Chapter 4, "Coaching Issues," discusses what to do when observing and being observed. Chapter 5, "Your Role in Developing Student Teacher Understanding and Competencies," focuses on building relationships with students and families, establishing authority and control of the classroom, making values clear and consistent, engaging every learner, and the path to "automaticity". An appendix presents a reflection guide for teachers. (SM)
