AbstractA project to develop the Longitudinal Primary Care Program at University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine is described. In addition to producing three curriculum documents, this 3-year project included a faculty development program, preparation of a training handbook and communications system for medical preceptors, and development of a program evaluation protocol. Students in year 1 are assigned to a volunteer preceptor for 3 years to learn from one-to-one interaction with physicians in family medicine, general medicine, or pediatrics. During the first year students attend half-day sessions once a month with their preceptor; in the second and third years, the half-day sessions are held twice a month. There are three required courses: "The Doctor and Patient" (year 1);"Doctor and Patient, Family, and Community" (year 2); and "The Doctor, the Patient and Continuous Care" (year 3). Ten evaluation instruments were developed. Physician peers were used to train preceptors, and three faculty workshops were developed, as were two self-instructional packages to help physicians in their teaching role. The content of faculty training evolved as a result of a preceptor survey, which is appended. A program evaluation student survey and program evaluation results are also appended. (SW)
