Abstract	This report presents the conclusions of a consortium of organizations on the development of a framework for the appropriate preparation, use, and supervision of paraprofessionals in the delivery of speech and language services in early intervention and educational settings for children with communication disorders. The framework establishes three levels of paraprofessionals, with job titles such as aide, assistant, and associate, all working under the supervision of a licensed/certified speech language pathologist. Provided for each level is information on the nature of the role and its responsibilities, the education and training needed, and the degree of supervision required by individuals in that role. The framework also specifies the additional knowledge and skills needed by the speech-language pathologist to adequately supervise and use the various levels of paraprofessional personnel in a comprehensive service system. Also specifically identified are those activities which should remain outside the scope of responsibilities of a paraprofessional in speech-language pathology. Attached is a detailed matrix listing the roles and responsibilities, needed competencies/skills, and needed knowledge for each of the three paraprofessional levels. (DB)
