AbstractThe literature on integration of academic and vocational education was reviewed to identify strategies for school districts planning to integrate their academic and vocational programs. Among the topics examined were the following: reasons for integrating academic and vocational education; meaning of curriculum integration; essential components of integrated programs; forms and examples of curriculum integration; effectiveness of various curriculum integration efforts; and policy questions entailed in integrating academic and vocational programs. After the literature review had been completed, an instructional guidance system was proposed as a starting point for school divisions planning to integrate academic and vocational education. The proposal called for the following: curriculum of integrated academic and vocational education that is organized around academic and technical skills and personal qualities and delivered through situated learning; interdisciplinary approach in both academic and vocational classrooms; collaboration between vocational and academic teachers to devise thematic units/projects/assessments; curriculum situated in both school- and work-based learning environments; and appropriate connecting activities, including career counseling and service learning, to link both environments.
