Abstract | In winter 1994, Alberta Vocational College (Canada) conducted a study to explore the extent of gambling among college students; examine the preferences, frequency, intensity, duration, and maximum wagers associated with gambling activities; identify gambling-related problems; and create awareness of the extent of gambling participation and gambling-related problems. Questionnaires were administered to all students enrolled at the college in fall 1994, receiving responses from 95% (n=521) of the student body. Questions solicited information on student characteristics, gambling activities, reasons for gambling, and the existence of conditions commonly associated with problem gambling. Study findings included the following: (1) 88% of respondents had played a game for money or spent money on gambling; (2) 59% who said they had ever gambled were female, while 41% were male; (3) 63% of those who had gambled felt that it was a form of recreation, while 48% felt that it provided a quick source of tax-free income; (4) 18% of gamblers confirmed that they had borrowed money to gamble; (5) 41% of the gamblers indicated that tended to gamble alone, compared to 31% who gambled with friends; and (6) 268 students indicated that their gambling had created problems, with 25% citing financial setbacks, 23% stress, and 10% marital problems. Contains 23 references. Responses to open-ended questions and the survey instrument are appended. (HAA) |
