| Abstract | Widespread concern about teenage childbearing led to the establishment of numerous intervention programs throughout the United States during the 1980s. Nevertheless, between the mid-1980s and the early 1990s, the teen birth rate rose in every state. This volume examines numerous prevention programs and makes recommendations for establishing effective preventative measures. Research shows that no remarkably successful program stands out in reducing adolescent childbearing. Unfortunately, aside from a few well-designed, well-implemented, and well-evaluated studies, most of the program that have been implemented have been small, ad hoc, and poorly designed short-term projects. To identify strategies that will affect levels of adolescent sexual activity, contraceptive use, and pregnancy, it will be necessary to mount a coherent set of evaluation studies based on theory and existing research, using rigorous experimental methods. There is a need to develop broader programs that not only focus on poverty, school failure, and family problems, but also develop family strengths. Three appendices, which make up the bulk of the document, are: (1) Programs/Interventions by Evaluation Approach; (2) Power Analyses, which describes a statistical measure of a program's effect; and (3) Pregnancy Prevention Programs and Evaluations: Detailed Descriptions.
