Abstract | This publication seeking to assist social studies educators at the middle grades level, this publication considers some of the salient issues in the field of social studies; ways to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the important developmental stage of early adolescence; and how to recognize the importance of developing and implementing sound social studies programs based on this knowledge. Chapter 1 discusses the developmental realities of early adolescence with an emphasis on implications for social studies instruction. Chapter 2 considers social studies specifically with a definition and analysis of the objectives of social studies and guidelines for enhancing instruction. Chapter 3 contains selected resources useful to social studies educators. Chapter 4 offers selected conclusions and recommendations regarding middle level social studies curriculum and instruction. The final section of the publication, contains "resources for additional reading" and provides a wide variety of suggested sources for those wishing to go beyond the scope of the publication. (DB) |
