Abstract | More than 100 nuclear power plants supply over 17 percent of the electricity in the United States. The basic principles of how nuclear energy works and how it is used to make electricity are explained in this profusely illustrated booklet written for the average sixth grade reader. Discussions include: (1) atomic structure; (2) nuclear fission; (3) how heat is produced; (4) how electricity is produced; (5) radioactivity; (6) fuel management; (7) waste from nuclear power; and (8) the status of nuclear power in the world. The Chernobyl (USSR) reactor and cooling towers are highlighted. Many diagrams are included. (CW) |
