Abstract | A unit in college-level business French is designed to call on students' imagination and desire to become entrepreneurs, while providing information on the structure and environment of a company. The core of the unit is the creation of a fictitious company whose operation lends itself to a variety of exercises tailored to the needs of students at various levels of language proficiency and business knowledge. Intense role-playing, class discussions using special terminology, and key concepts of French business are used. The unit requires a minimum of six sessions to complete, and some knowledge of commercial company law is a prerequisite. The class is divided into groups for decision-making as the company is formed, and students discuss ideas for an appropriate business. Then, four aspects of the company's formation are considered: (1) its legal form; (2) the establishment process; (3) a suitable organization for smooth operation; and (4) a marketing strategy. An example of the establishment of a fictitious business by this teaching method is provided, and the four steps are described. It is concluded that the unit generates excitement and a sense of common purpose among the students, and that it reflects a new attitude about entrepreneurship in France. (MSE) |
