| Abstract | In 1987, the Wisconsin Cooperative Extension Service conducted a survey to determine the impacts of Extension's efforts to assist and educate leaders of community groups. A broad range of community leadership positions served by Cooperative Extension were included in the study. A total of 344 leaders were systematically selected in a stratified sample to represent areas of the state where Extension has recently served each leader grouping. Approximately 80 percent of the sample completed a mailed questionnaire, and 91 percent of a subsample of the group completed a telephone interview. The Leadership Impact Study produced a large body of data across a very diverse group of respondents. Some of the conclusions drawn were as follows: (1) leaders in all types of community groups that are assisted by Cooperative Extension experience positive changes in their leadership skills, their leadership perspectives, and their community participation during the course of serving in leadership positions; (2) leaders consider their current performance in the areas of organizing and relating skills and planning and directing skills as okay but not good, and they rate their leadership perspectives as moderately high and their level of participation as above average; (3) Cooperative Extension is rated as a more important influence on leadership development of community leaders than other organizations; (4) Cooperative Extension provides different types of assistance and education for different clientele; and (5) groups and organizations served by leaders accomplish significant benefits for their members and the broader community. Recommendations were made for improvements in the leadership training programs based on the results of the study.
