| Abstract | An extensive basal evaluation form--written in a series of 73 questions, each requiring a short narrative response and many with specific references to notes in the appendices--is presented in this paper. The evaluation form is divided into two sections: general questions on teacher's guides and general questions on student books. The questions on student books are subdivided into the following categories: (1) audience appropriateness; (2) phonics; (3) schema theory; (4) learning strategies; (5) text structure; (6) vocabulary; (7) megacognitive theory; (8) graphics; (9) workbooks; and (10) tests. Descriptions of research keyed to specific questions supplement the evaluation form and are appended. These comprise 80 percent of the document. A bibliography is included. (JD) |
