Abstract | International and comparative trends in higher education since the mid-1960s throughout the world are addressed in two essays, and a bibliography of some 7,000 works of higher education worldwide is presented. The essays were commissioned by the European Centre for Higher Education (CEPES), a decentralized unit of UNESCO. Philip G. Altbach's essay, "Perspectives on Comparative Higher Education: A Survey of Research and Literature," considers the emergence of higher education as a field of study, the research system and dissemination infrastructure, and research trends. Jan Kluczynski's essay, "Research on Higher Education in European Socialist Countries," considers education and socialism, educational planning and development, and research centers. Key topics of the bibliography are: higher education history, educational economics; statistics; policy and planning; institutional planning; academic profession; students; activism; student adjustment; student attitudes; foreign students; education for the professions; access and stratification; intercultural relations and development; university-society relations; theories of higher education; reform; research; law; governance and administration; comparative studies; teaching and curricular developments; and education and technology. For each topic, publications are identified on Africa, Asia, Australia and Micronesia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East and North Africa, and North America. (SW) |
