Abstract | Conceived at an executive board meeting of the International Federation for the Teaching of English, this book describes the classroom practices of English teachers in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, and the United States. The 82 articles are divided into the following areas: (1) a history of teaching English in each country; (2) new directions in teaching English (megatrends in English teaching, the English primary school, and English teaching in the 80s and 90s); (3) the teaching of literature and reading (fantasy, personalized reading programs, English and reading in the new media, poetry, and responses to literature); (4) the teaching of writing and the composition process; (5) oral language and drama; (6) language and learning; (7) multicultural education; (8) classroom management (resources and constraints, organizing for television study, and individualized poetry instruction); (9) the English curriculum; and (10) evaluation and assessment in English.
