Abstract | The middle school grades are a period of transition: a time in the formal educational process when immature children develop into young adolescents who are better prepared for the rigors of higher education and life itself. In order to help children master the sophisticated social studies concepts and skills necessary for higher secondary education and effective citizen participation, the K-12 social studies curriculum must be continuously integrated and sequential. The social studies teach understandings, attitudes, and skills which are related to each other and general skills that are the tools to learning. Middle school students should learn by applying Jerome Bruner's model of: acquisition of new information; transformation of information; and evaluation of information. Since students in the typical middle school classroom frequently show a broad range of distinctive learning styles and ability, appropriate adjustments in instruction must be an integral part of curriculum design. This document includes two sample curriculum designs. (CFR) |
