Abstract | This manual is intended to assist health occupations education (HOE) teachers in planning clinical experiences for their students. Addressed in the individual sections of the guide are the following topics: the purpose, philosophy, and legal aspects of clinical experiences in HOE; the HOE clinical structure (teacher qualifications, the role of the teacher/coordinator, advisory committees, and sample models of clinical experiences in HOE programs); clinical agencies (health agencies, community surveys; occupational analysis, training agreements, and training plans); selection of students (student occupational objectives, age, grade-point average, faculty recommendations, student-parent agreements, standards and dress codes, transportation, and student costs); placement of students in health agencies (conduct guidelines, resumes, letters of application, student certification, coordination visits, and student folders); evaluation of clinical experience (teacher/coordinator, on-site supervisor, and student evaluation, as well as clinical agency evaluation of the HOE program); and completion of the clinical component of the program (competency profiles, certificates of completion, agency/student recognition, and planning and revisions). Lists of references and suggested readings are provided. Appendixes, which comprise more than half of the manual, include 28 forms and information products that may be adapted to individual programs.
