| Abstract | Drawing upon Elgin Community College's (ECC's) 7-year history of program development and operation, this paper demonstrates how ECC, in cooperation with Northern Illinois Industries, Computervision Corporation, Mazak Corporation, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, established a Computer-Aided Design and Drafting/Computer-Aided Machining (CADD/CAM) program, and how this program benefits industries in the surrounding area. Introductory comments describing ECC's initial involvement in CADD are followed by an enumeration of the advantages of CADD involvement for business and industry. The report continues by demonstrating how a CADD/CAM program enables the community college to meet its primary goal of providing realistic and quality instruction, while meeting industries' needs for entry-level designers. Next, the paper discusses how a student may become involved in the CADD program, the CADD classes offered at ECC, criteria for success in the field, and recommendations of ECC's advisory committee related to CADD/CAM classes. The report concludes by discussing the expansion of ECC technology to include industrial robotics, and the educational implications of computer-integrated manufacturing.
