Abstract | Intended to address the problems associated with functionally illiterate students, this manual provides vocational educators with strategies for incorporating reading skills into specific content area instruction. The exercises stress the skills necessary to assess vocational classroom reading materials, develop content specific vocabulary, and comprehend dense technical material. In each of these areas, the manual introduces a particular developmental reading technique, provides sample exercises from vocational textbooks, and then allows the instructor to develop a lesson from his/her own textbook using the technique. Instructor worksheets are provided. Materials in the section on readability and testing cover such topics as readability analysis, the Fry Graph, the Flesch Readability Formula, application of readability data, the Bormuth Cloze Readability Technique, standardized reading tests, and evaluation of student comprehension. The section on vocabulary development considers directed vocabulary lessons, multiple meanings, structure, and context clues. Topics in the section on comprehension and study skills include guided reading assignments, previewing textbooks, setting goals and objectives, the anticipation guide, SQ3R (Survey, question, read, recite, review), the theory of time-spaced learning, and mapping. An appendix contains materials on syllabication, the Barrett taxonomy, and suffixes and roots. (YLB) |
