Abstract | The relationship between nonstandard dialects of English and the reading process is addressed in this booklet, designed for use by reading practitioners and other educators. The main questions are treated in connection with: (1) language difference and reading; (2) approaches to reading and dialect differences; (3) reading materials and dialect differences; and (4) reading tests and dialect differences. Some of the specific issues treated are: (1) the possibility of predicting reading problems; (2) the relationship between lack of proficiency in spoken language and difficulty in learning to read; (3) the problem of differences between the dialect of the student and that of the reading materials; (4) the connection between comprehension problems and effective methods; (5) the question of alternatives to conventional reading texts; (6) reading failure among nonstandard English speakers in connection with choice of reading materials; (7) detecting the cause of "incorrect" responses on standardized tests; and (8) the use of other testing techniques.
