Abstract | A comprehensive survey of the adult population of Southeastern Connecticut was conducted by Mohegan Community College to determine the region's adult education needs. After a pilot study, a 96-item questionnaire was designed to evaluate the demographic make-up of the target population and to determine (1) the accuracy of educational information that adults possessed; (2) their level of satisfaction with educational opportunities in the region; (3) their attitudes on higher education and adult basic education; (4) the preferred sources of information; (5) the most popular educational programs; and (6) the obstacles adults encountered in continuing their education. Quotas for each town within the survey region insured contact with 0.5% of the adult residents. The study found that though personal living skills generated the most interest among adults, there was a demand for advanced educational training. Newspapers proved to be the most popular source of educational information. Urban residents were more satisfied with educational opportunities than suburban or rural respondents. Child care was the major obstacle to continuing formal education. The study report summarizes the findings for each item on the questionnaire and relates differences in questionnaire responses by significant demographic characteristics. The procedures and problems involved in the development and execution of the survey are discussed. (JP) |
