AbstractAfter a brief historical review of the background and research, the paper focuses on development of a teacher-administered behavior rating scale to screen for school adaptation problems on a large scale basis using as Ss 15 primary grade teachers and their ratings of 315 primary grade children (ages 6-to-10 years) in their classes. A 16-item Classroom Adaptation Scale (CAS) (developed from previous research) included ratings for aggression, emotionality, learning problems, and total score. The AML Behavior Rating Scale (P. Bessier and P. Van Fleet) scored aggressive-outgoing (A), moody-internalizing (M), learning disability (L), and total score. The CAS and the AML were used along with a demographic questionnaire to test the validity of the CAS. Results were generally positive with each subscale of the CAS relatively non-overlapping and stable; the learning problem and aggression subscales were more homogeneous and stable than the emotionality subscale. It was determined that the CAS can provide an adequate global measure of school maladaptation. The instrument was also found to be highly reliable and have convergent validity as related to the AML.
