AbstractExamined is the success of Monash's Early Leavers' Scheme in terms of the performance, characteristics, and experience of successful applicants, and the manner in which the scheme has operated. The first section of the report provides background information on the establishment of the Scheme (to provide a modification to entry requirements for disadvantaged students) and describes selection methods (such as aptitude tests). Section 2 presents data regarding the number of applicants and numbers surviving at different parts of the selection procedure (the number of applicants was found to decrease each year), and outlines, in statistical form, socio-educational characteristics of the entrants (including age, sex, nationality, level and type of secondary education, postsecondary qualifications, and previous occupation). Section 3 details the performance and withdrawal rate of Early Leavers (the yearly pass rate was 80% and the withdrawal rate 15%). Results of entrant interviews are examined in section 4 (including information regarding financial support, personal life, academic problems, and vocational plans). The final section makes recommendations for methods of selection and the need for special assistance. Appended are an application form and entrant questionnaires. (BD)
