Abstract | The nine units highlight the history, activities, values, and aspirations of the Canadian labor force. The program's purpose is to help secondary school social studies students develop a more objective appreciation of labor and of labor's role in Canadian social history. The first unit, "Union Today," analyzes contemporary union activity and provides a basis for further labor studies. Other units are: "Origins of Canadian Labour;""The Impact of Key Events;""The Workingman: A Social Perspective;""Union Leadership;""Varieties of Labour;""Labour and the Law;""Labour and Politics;" and "Labour and the Future." For each unit, information is presented on objectives, rationale, content, strategy, and resources. Activities involve students in defining terms; reading about labor leaders and labor activities; presenting written and oral reports; participating in simulations of labor/management relations; making files of labor-related news clippings; analyzing illustrations, slides, tape recordings, and documents; interviewing; visiting local labor meetings; analyzing tables of data; debating about the quality of workers' lives; and problem solving. An appendix presents resource materials for each unit, such as newspaper clippings, texts of labor legislation, historical documents, government reports, and collective bargaining agreements.
