Abstract	A survey including 224 elementary, middle, and Black public school teachers from rural and urban Georgia school districts was conducted to examine basic knowledge about and attitudes toward educable mentally retarded (EMR) and trainable mentally retarded (TMR) learners. The survey instrument focused on basic knowledge of the handicapping condition, attitudes toward mainstreaming, and attitudes about the adaptive capabilities of retarded individuals. Among findings were that basic knowledge about the EMR and TMR handicapping conditions was limited, that less than half the respondents felt that both EMR and TMR children would benefit from mainstreaming, and that respondents held conflicting opinions regarding the role of the school as a source of attitude change in society and the ability of the schools to implement effective mainstreaming. Most of the teachers did not perceive the responsibilities of the classroom teacher to include working with EMR and TMR children in the regular classroom without additional staff support. (SBH)
