Abstract	Traditional criticisms of existing graduate training in education are twofold: (1) that much of what passes for graduate research is trivial in nature; and (2) poor quality is apparent in dissertations and published research. In addition, some feel that the research done in graduate programs has little impact on real educational reform. There is another area in which training could be improved: training for the rigors of professional survival. More attention should be paid to developing succinct and appropriate writing skills for publishing in journals, grantsmanship, interpersonal and organizational competence, and teaching. In many of the above areas the current programs, by their neglect, are ill preparing graduates for the realities of professional existence. (Author/MSE)
