Abstract | The guide contains basic information for establishing a work activity center, a work-oriented facility providing compensatory pre-vocational and vocational education and training programs for men and women of post-school age. The center serves those mentally retarded adults not developmentally prepared to enter a sheltered workshop program. The first two chapters present an historical overview of activity center programs and the related contemporary philosophy and ideology, based on the principle of normalization and the developmental model. The next five chapters discuss the following planning and program considerations of an activity center: planning a work activity center, individual evaluation and program planning, personal-social adjustment training, work adjustment training, and vocational training. The final chapter is a comprehensive guide to administration of the activity center. A list of national organizations and Federal agencies interested in the handicapped and a 136-item bibliography are appended. (Author/MS) |
