AbstractThis study examines the effects of various combinations of teaching methods on unstructured written responses to poetry. The methods involved were studying short films related to the poems, listening to audio-tapes of the poems, and discussing poems in class. These three variables were combined in a 2 x 2 x 2 design. The subjects were 324 twelfth grade students (twelve classes) from three suburban Pittsburgh high schools. Among the major findings of this study are: students who studied short films related to poems wrote significantly more statements about the poems than students who did not study the films; students who listened to audio-tapes of poems or who discussed poems wrote significantly more statements about the poems than students who did not listen to or discuss the poems; students who listened to audio-tapes of poems wrote significantly more interpretive statements than students who did not listen to poems; students who discussed poems wrote significantly more engagement statements than students who did not discuss poems; and students who listened to audio-tapes of poems and students who discussed poems wrote fewer than the expected number of perception statements.
