Abstract | Students of teachers using the manual proceed at individual rates through a systematic and progressive set of occupational experiences to formulate and know their self-concepts, potentials, and abilities. Emphasis is on independent research and study, and sample lesson plans help teachers coordinate the variety of experiences. The manual includes specific examples and sources for materials, many of them locally oriented, that have been successfully used to teache secondary special education students career decision making and the necessary entry level skills for employment. A course outline in the form of a student checklist provides a guide to preparing the student for gainful employment. Materials in the manual include sample aptitude and interest testing instruments, a listing of jobs in 15 career clusters, suggestions for field trips and guest speakers, a bibliography of commercially prepared instructional materials, suggestions for a basic collection of career literature, information on setting up cooperative education, providing exploratory work experiences via work-stations (including local laws governing such programs), an instructional unit in interviewing, a sample data sheet to help students fill out applications, and a catalog of 82 locally-produced videotapes.
